ITV Joan: Did jewel thief Joan Hannington go to prison for her crimes?

ITV drama Joan depicts the criminal lifestyle of notorious jewel thief Joan Hannington.

Also known as The Godmother, she was a notorious figure in London's criminal underworld during the 1980s who stole diamonds for the thrill and to raise funds to rescue her daughter from foster care.

The six-part series recreates the events leading to Hannington losing her child to foster care, her first theft involving impulsively swallowing jewels, and her subsequent life of crime.

Its final two episodes will air on ITV1 on Sunday and Monday, with the entire series currently available to watch in full on ITVX.

Viewers will have seen Joan's heists and lavish lifestyle but did she ever go to prison and she was ever jailed for a jewel heist?

Aged 24, Joan Hannington was arrested and later sentenced to 30 months in prison after she using a stolen cheque book. She married Boisie in Acton Register Office and two weeks later was jailed.

Her time in prison occurred before she became a diamond thief. After serving her sentence, Joan was released from prison and secured a job at a jewellery store where she resumed stealing jewels to make a living.

Her criminal lifestyle and jewel heists is shared in her memoir I Am What I Am. You can buy a copy of the book through Amazon or Waterstones.

While the book served as material for the six-part drama, there are some elements that were changed in the ITV drama. For instance, the violent raid on Bernard's jewel shop never happened, nor did Boisie's death by being shot in the leg.

The real Boisie Hannington has died, but he died trying to burn a house down to claim insurance money. Giving an exclusive interview with the Scottish Daily Record in 2003, the real-life Joan recounted her time with Boisie: "He wasn't handsome, but he was smart and treated me with respect.

"Officially, Benny was an antiques dealer, but he made his money as a high-class thief. We fell in love and within weeks he'd moved in."

Joan was never jailed for an armed jewellery raid or any of her criminal acts.
