Mechanic urges Brits to make 30-second check to avoid autumn accidents

One of the most watched mechanics on YouTube has recommended that drivers check a certain component on their car regularly to avoid causing accidents and fines.

Scotty Kilmer has worked with cars for more than 55 years and regularly posts videos onto YouTube in which he shares tips to help other drivers stay safe and save money.

In a recent video, Scotty urged drivers to regularly check the tread depths of their tyres, partiularly when getting behind the wheel in wet weather.

He advised: "Today I'm going to show you how not to crash your car. First, check the tyres. If they're getting bald, change them soon!

"If it's raining and your car has bald tyres, you'll hit the brakes and the car will just slide right into somebody."

As a tyre wears out, the amount of tread it has will decrease, bringing a number of serious disadvantages with it. One of the most common symptoms of driving on worn out tyres is increased stopping distances, putting drivers and other road users at risk of injury when taking an emergency stop.

However, when travelling in wet weather, drivers may also find that tyres with a lesser tread are less effective at sweeping away water, running the risk of aquaplaning, causing the vehicle to lose contact with the road.

Many motoring experts recommend that drivers check the tread depths of their tyres once every two weeks to avoid these deadly problems, getting them replaced if they are less than 1.6mm.

Later in the video, Scotty also urged drivers looking to keep themselves and their vehicle safe to avoid looking at their phone behind the wheel.

He added: "And don't be looking at your phone. If you have to use it, hook it up to your Bluetooth. Don't be driving along and looking at your phone.

"I have seen so many people get into wrecks because they were looking at their phone while they were driving."
