Deadwood legend dies as John Carpenter pays emotional tribute

Deadwood star Peter Jason has died at the age of 80, and tributes are pouring in for the legendary actor who starred as Con Stapleton.

Jason enjoyed a successful career, starring in numerous films and TV shows, and accumulated over 270 acting credits, according to his IMDb page.

He also appeared in several John Carpenter and Walter Hill directed films, and after his death was announced, the director was among heartbroken fans took to social media to remember the actor.

"Peter Jason, one of the great character actors in cinema, has died," wrote John Carpenter on X. "His first movie was Howard Hawks' RIO LOBO. He was a dear friend, and I'll miss him terribly."

The pair had collaborated on many films, including Prince of Darkness, They Live, Body Bags, In the Mouth of Madness, Village of the Damned, Escape from L.A., and Ghosts of Mars.

As well as Deadwood, Jason's starring roles included The Karate Kid, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, Congo, and Mortal Kombat.

Born in Hollywood on July 22, 1944, Jason was raised in Balboa Peninsula, Newport Beach, where he lived with his family and completed his schooling.

After graduating from Newport Harbor High School, the actor attended Orange Coast College and studied drama at Carnegie Mellon University before marking his first TV appearance in 1967.

At the time, he featured in a humble role as an unnamed duty officer in the TV movie A Bell for Adano, which was an adaptation of the 1944 novel by John Hersey.

The actor's other celebrity pals, including Jason Charles Miller, paid tribute as the American singer penned: "You know his face. He’s been in hundreds of movies and shows you’ve seen. Peter Jason. A true working man’s actor if there ever was one.

"A hero of mine, and once, he was even in one of my music videos! They don’t make ‘em like him anymore. Rest easy, my friend."

Film star Kevin Sizemore recalled: "Peter Jason was the first person I met when I moved to Hollywood nearly 30 years ago. He met me for lunch & welcomed me into his home. When I asked him what’s the key for an actor’s success……he said 'Just stick around kid. Your time will come.'"

As a fan echoed: "RIP Peter Jason, his face will always be a familiar one to me."

While Jason's cause of death remains undisclosed, it's said that a number of his recent acting appearances are reportedly in pre-production and post-production.
