  • Three children and adult stabbed
  • Trio rushed to hospital in stable condition

A father has woken to screams before trying desperately to save his three children from their mother who allegedly went on a stabbing spree in the family home on Monday morning.

NSW Police were called to Jamieson Avenue, in Sydney's Baulkham Hills, at 5.15am where a 10-year-old boy, 13-year-old girl, 16-year-old girl and 47-year-old woman were found stabbed.

The father and the children were all asleep in their bedrooms when the mother allegedly went on a rampage.

The father managed to wrestle a knife off the mother but not before she had allegedly repeatedly stabbed their three children and herself.

Police, who seized a household knife, arrested the mother and were treating the incident as an attempted triple filicide and suicide attempt.

Hills Police Area Command Detective Superintendent Naomi Moore said police had been told the mother was acting erratically in the day leading it up to the attack and it was believed she was suffering a psychotic episode.

'It's a family home and that family is not known to police. No domestic violence incidents have ever been reported to police it's completely unexpected,' Detective Superintendent Moore said.

'It's certainly not something I want to wake up to on a Monday morning. It's a tragic morning. Those childern should make a full physical recovery.'

The 47-year-old woman was taken to hospital under police guard as a crime scene was established.

She was stabbed three times in the stomach, the young boy was stabbed twice in the chest, and both girls were stabbed three times in the arm and stomach.

Detective Superintendent Moore said the woman's injuries were self-inflicted and although she was in a stable condition, she has not been interviewed by police.

One neighbour, who asked not to be identified, described the children as 'friendly and lovely'.

She said the eldest child was in a wheelchair, which police confirmed.

The Hills Shire Council Mayor Michelle Byrne said the incident was 'devastating' for the local community.

'They're already reeling,' she said.

'As a mum and a mayor, my heart breaks for those children.'

There was a picture in the house with the words: 'This is my happy place.'
