Just days after Thomas Tuchel demanded more impact from England's widemen, Arsenal's Ethan Nwaneri gave the national coach a reminder of his talents by scoring a wonder goal for the U21s against Portugal.

Tuchel kicked off his reign as England boss with a workmanlike 2-0 win against Albania on Friday.

After the match, the former Chelsea boss complained that he wanted more from his two wingers — Phil Foden and Marcus Rashford.

'We hope for more impact in these positions,' Tuchel said.

'More dribbling and more aggressive runs towards the box. In general that was missing. The chances come from the little runs behind the line. They were not as decisive as they can be.'

England again struggled to break down modest opposition as they were indebted to an excellent Reece James free-kick to take a 1-0 lead into half-time on Monday night at Wembley.

The 18-year-old has emerged as one of the best young players in the Premier League

Meanwhile, a possible solution to England's problems was perhaps emerging 125 miles north at The Hawthorns as Lee Carsley's Under 21 side took on Portugal.

Arsenal flyer Nwaneri has been one of the finds of the season and the 18-year-old underlined his talents by scoring a brilliant second goal for the young Three Lions side.

Receiving the ball 30 yards from goal, Nwaneri drove forward, wrongfooted Joao Muniz with a drop of the shoulder and then curled the ball into the corner of the net from 18 yards.

The strike put England 2-0 up and led many fans to urge Tuchel to promote Nwaneri to the senior squad.

'Should be replacing Foden in the senior team,' wrote one on X.

While another posted: 'He will leave the U21 very soon. He is needed in the senior team.'

And a third added: 'Matter of time until he’s in the full squad.'

The senior squad do not play again until June when they travel to Andorra for a World Cup qualifier before they host Senegal in a Wembley friendly.

So, Nwaneri will have to provide more moments of brilliance in an Arsenal shirt at the backend of the domestic season to prove he is the man to solve Tuchel's wide problems.
